Sea Smoke Sunset
Two Harbors, Minnesota
A few brave souls take a windy walk along a breakwall in subzero temperatures to get a closer look at "sea smoke" on Lake Superior. This phenomenon, also known as steam fog, happens whenever extremely cold air moves over a warmer body of water causing the water to steam. On the day this photo was taken (Dec. 26, 2017) Lake Superior was approximately 35°F (2°C) with an air temperature that reached a frigid -22°F (-30°C).
